Travels inspire artist Jared Betts

For the next month and a half, visitors will be able to see the work of a young up and coming talent, Jared Betts.

"I was living in Halifax," says Jared, "and moved back to Moncton in 2010. I have been looking for a great place to showcase my work and am glad to have it be the Capitol."

The show, featuring work created in, or inspired by Jared's artist residency last year in Ciudad Colon, Costa Rica, is filled with bright colours and imaginative abstraction.

"I remember being in the rain forest, and walking along looking at these houses painted in such bright beautiful colours," Jared says. "That vibrant landscape was my inspiration for the works."

Jared was born in Moncton, and then went on to earn a bachelor's degree in Fine Arts from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in May 2010. Since 2007 and his decision to make art the focus of his life, he has exhibited his works in over 40 group and solo shows in Atlantic Canada and internationally in several cities in Iceland.

In the summer of 2010, Jared was an artist-in-residence at NES Artist Residency in Skagaströnd in the north of Iceland. Then came the artist residency in Costa Rica.

He has been invited to return to Costa Rica in 2012 for a four-month artist residency in the rainforest and to have a juried solo exhibition at The National Gallery of Costa Rica in San Jose.

"I have been very fortunate to go to these places," Jared muses. "Each place that I travel to has its own culture and therefore its own different art. The creation is taking from the different surroundings. In Costa Rica, the art is very, very bright, very expressive of the southern colours. Iceland has abstract art that really seems to be echoing the lava and volcanic nature of the landscape."

When queried about Maritime culture, he points to the coastal nature of our art, a lot of boats and wharf villages and seascapes. Add to that the uniqueness of Acadian art and this area, too, has a cultural influence on hi work.

"Through each experience my art changes and my points of view about everything changes," Jared says. "Being introduced to new cultures and new languages, new ways of thinking, I bring that into each piece and my style changes from each different residency I do."

In a broader sense, Jared feels that the unifying theme in art is expressing individuality through creating. One of the things that he most enjoys about it is being able to actually create out of nothing. To start with a blank canvas and then paint something that moves other people is probably one of his biggest drives.

"Generally I paint when I feel in a good mood," he says, "and so perhaps my work is filled with inspiration and striving to break the conventions of classical paintings - I am trying to express feelings in an illustrated way.

"Depending on which colours, that sets mood - look at old gothic art and the darker colours, or the war paintings of the 1900s and the mood created through colour and energy... you can sense the mood from just the medium... Where as if you look at an expressionistic painting of a Sunday morning boat ride, it is more gestural and easygoing."

His paintings thus end up more abstract and more emotion-based than reality based. He describes them as thoughts brought to life. In his artist statement it goes on to describe them as structured yet tumultuous, giving avoice to unspoken emotion and the endless static noise of the mind through the long term evolution of compositional arrangement. So he uses bright colours, optical illusions, abstraction and bold gestures to grasp attention.

"I explore the metaphysical," Jared says. "Lately I have done a lot of research on science and colour and the way the brain and the eye is connected. As I have been doing that, the metaphysical questions, around being and question seems to be present. There is a deeper message being displayed in the art which is very interesting."

On display at the Capitol Gallery are five pieces painted in Costa Rica and a number painted in his studio at the Aberdeen Cultural Centre which were influenced by his time there. He describes them as a cross between the things he saw and the dreams he has had since then.

"I am pretty excited about the show and I think that people will see that," he says.

Meanwhile, across Main Street at the Moncton Gallery in city hall, Jared Betts, back from a month-long artist's residency in Costa Rica, is preparing for today's vernissage for a collection of mixed media and acrylic paintings inspired by the lush and vibrant colours of Central America. He's also just organized the studio on the third floor of the Aberdeen Cultural Centre which he's subletting from Yvon Gallant and George Blanchette for a year. He has been accepted as artist in residence at the Dieppe Arts and Culture Centre for four months and is preparing for an exhibition in the Irving Lobby of the Capitol Theatre early in 2012 as well as for a joint exhibition with Paul Edouard Bourque at the Ingrid Mueller Gallery in Fredericton.

And if working in two studios, up to 10 hours every day, is not enough to keep this 2010 NSCAD graduate busy, he'll be heading back to Costa Rica for four months next September, where he will exhibit the results of a second and longer residency at the National Gallery in San Jose.

In his artist statement, Jared describes his work, which explodes with colour, as being "somewhere between fiction and reality, (a place where) my thoughts and dreams are brought to life as I create surreal worlds that defy law and reason."

Firm in his belief that the visual images, from a variety of sources - childhood, nature, fantasy, fashion and pop culture - speak for themselves, he leaves them untitled. "I try not to put words with something so visual," he says, "I like leaving them untitled so the viewer doesn't have pre-conceived ideas."

Jared began the work in this series by adding water to acrylic paint and allowing it to drip down the canvas randomly, before applying horizontal saturated colour fields, mathematically arranged, and then creating explosions of energy, with colours laid on gesturally, using markers, acrylic or neon paints.

"This is the first time I've worked with neon," he says. "They're fun to work with and add a hyperfusion of colour."

While these paintings don't have words attached to them I'm thinking they couldn't have been created in a soundless vacuum, as they pulsate with energy vibrations. So I asked Jared one of my favourite questions - what music do you listen to? His answer was no surprise.

"Sometimes acoustic and sometimes electro - drums and bass," he says. "I like hip-hop and trip-hop which is all instrumental and house music. I guess you could say I'm all over the map and I like to change it up a lot."

The vernissage for Jared Betts' exhibition at Moncton City Hall takes place today from 6 to 9 p.m. The exhibit will remain in place until Nov. 3. Check out his website at www.jaredbetts.com

Artists take sounds, colour around globe

Speaking of pre-conceived ideas, before I saw Jared Betts' painting exhibition, Icelandic Abstractions, in Galerie Sans Sous at the Aberdeen Cultural Centre, I was expecting monochromatic greys and whites.

After all, Iceland is sort of white and gray isn't it? It turns out nothing could be further from the truth.

Jared, upon graduation from NSCAD, spent three months as an Artist in Residence in the remote northern fishing village of Skagaströnd, and says the ground cover of flora and mosses has some remarkably vivid colours. As well, there's a vibrant arts culture.

"People in Iceland are really supportive of the arts," he says, as he explains the residency program in which up to 15 artists, from a variety of media including sculpture and photography, are provided with a studio and an apartment for three months.

"It absolutely had a huge effect on my work," he says. "I used to paint with precise brush strokes, but there I was able to free up and be a lot less controlled."

Next on Jared's agenda is a one-month residency in Costa Rica in May, where he'll be living and painting in the jungle along with nine other artists who come from all over the world. Then in October, he's scheduled for another exhibition at Moncton City Hall Gallery. Meanwhile, his work will also be on display at Tide & Boar Market, that's opening soon on Main Street.

In addition to the support he's received from the residency programs and from the art community in Moncton, Jared says, "My family has always been very supportive."

Artists from the east coast of Canada were asked to paint army helmets for a group art show. Erika Ellsworth, Mitchell Wiebe and I are a few of the artists who have been asked to take part. The show was put on by The True Patriot Love Foundation of New Brunswick and P.E.I. . These helmets will be auctioned off at the October 28 dinner in Fredericton to raise funds for three charities benefiting injured soldiers and their families, including the Canadian Forces Benevolent Fund, Military Family Resource Centers and The Wounded Warriors Fund. This show will be on public display in Moncton, Charlottetown, St. John, and Fredericton.

12 painters collaborate to paint the full zodiac live during a party atmosphere. With The industry night DJ's and these 12 talented painters that Tuesday night was full of mental fun.

The Painters were lined up in a giant ring and were assigned one zodiac sign each. They only had a few hours to make these blank canvases into celestial symbols. The finished works were sold the night of show.
